Obituary for Nancy Li

Nancy Li
Nancy Woo Li passed away just three months short of 102 years of age, on March 28, 2017 at the Willows retirement home in Westborough, Ma. Nancy was born in Shanghai and educated at St. Mary’s Hall. She came to the USA at age 19 to study at Wellesley College, and went on to earn an M. A. in Social Work from Bryn Mawr College and Master of Education in Counselor Training from Boston State College. She was the first Chinese bilingual counselor in the Boston public school system, working for ten years at Charlestown and Brighton High Schools and assisting at two other schools. Her sensitivity and gift for languages enabled her to advise and communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and volunteers. After retirement she volunteered in the education of Cambridge primary students of Chinese heritage until moving to the Willows. She was devoted to Teh-ching Li, her husband of thirty years until his death in 1970, and devoted to their three children, Eric, an engineer, Jade, a scientist and Lynn, a doctor. She was a loving and inspiring grandmother to her grandchildren Victoria, Peter, Elisabet and Katherine. Sadly she lost Eric to cancer in 2002. She bore her own losses with fortitude and was ever considerate of others. She will be remembered as a woman of principle and for her intelligence, unfailing courtesy and wit. By request of the family her burial was private. In lieu of flowers please send donations in her honor to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 1150 17th Street, NW Suite 850, Washington, DC 20036 [ https://my.nof.org/donate ] and the American Civil Liberties Union, 125 Broad Street, 18th Floor, New York NY 10004 [ https://action.aclu.org ].
